The Guyana Boxing Association is preparing to host the second annual Caribbean School boys and Juniors tournament from May 12 to 14, 2017. This tournament which is the first of its kind in the Caribbean, had its genesis in Guyana one year ago and is expected to be an even greater success come May.
Speaking with The Xercise, GBA’s President, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, said, last year three countries namely; Jamaica, St. Lucia and Guyana participated in the tournament. However, because of the success, more territories have since signaled their interest and as such, started to send in their applications. The tournament would feature three categories, namely; boys 14-16 (school boys), boys 16-17 (junior) & boys 17-18 (youth).
In preparation for this tournament, Mr. Ninvalle mentioned that the Caribbean’s only three star Referee/judge, Mr. James Beckles, from the twin Island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago would be arriving in Guyana on May 9. He would be facilitating three days of workshop with local referee/judges who will be adjudicating throughout the tournament. This will ensure referees perform their duties to the highest standards.
The other countries signaling their interest are: St. Vincent, Barbados, Grenada, US Virgin Island, Antigua, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago, Anguilla and Suriname.
