Guyana’s Trenace Lowe storms into last eight

Guyana’s top female table tennis player Trenace Lowe last night stormed into the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Central American and Caribbean Games with a 4-2 whipping of Guatemala’s Hidalynn Zapata.

Lowe, who along with Chelsea Edghill were the only two female players to come out of their groups defeated Zapata 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5,  9-11 and 11-6.

Edghill, on the other hand, lost to Cuba’s Shelly Machado in a gripping five-setter 9-11, 14-16, 11-8, 9-11 and 9-11.

Lowe was scheduled to play Melanie Diaz of Puerto Rico later last evening for a place in the last four.

The Guyana male players Christopher Franklin, Shemar Britton and Nigel Bryan all lost their matches last evening.

Franklin lost 0-4 to Cuba’s Jorge Campos losing at 8, 7, 4 and 5 while Britton lost 1-4 to Emil Santos of the Dominican Republic.

Britton lost 13-11, 3-11, 5-11, 6-11 and 8-11 while Bryan lost 10-12, 5-11, 5-11 and 3-11 to Cuba’s Livan Martinez.

In the men’s doubles, Christopher Franklin and Shemar Britton defeated Jose Miguel Cachafeiro and David Dimas of Panama 3-1, 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5 in their opening round but lost to Mexicans Marcos Madrid and Ricardo Villa in the following round 7-11, 3-11, 10-11 to end their chances.

Nigel Bryan and Joel Alleyne lost to Venezuelans Marco Navas and Cecilio Correa in their opening round.

In the women’s doubles category, Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Greaves lost to Cuba’s Shelly Machado and Lizdainet Rodriguez 2-3; 6-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-4, 5-11 while Chelsea Edghill and Trenace Lowe lost to Trinidad & Tobago’s Linda Partap and Catherine Spicer 1 – 3; 12-13, 11-10, 10-11, 12-13 to end their chances.

The Mixed Doubles category, however, saw Chelsea Edghill and Shemar Britton defeating Colombia’ Miguel Aguirre and Manuela Echeverry 3-2; 6-11, 15-14, 12 -11, 11-6, 11-8 before losing to 8-11, 13-12, 5-11 to the Dominican Republic pair of Emil Santos and Eva Brito in the round of 16.

Joel Alleyne and Natalie Cummings, after receiving a bye in the round of 32, lost to Colombia’s Joaquin Villegas and Paula Medina in the round of 16.

Franklyn and Lowe, on the other hand, defeated Barbadians Marcus Smith and Jazel Griffith 11-3, 11-7, 11-10 in the round of 32 match but were beaten in the round of 16 by Lucia Cordero and Kevin Montufar of Guatemala 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11 while  Bryan and Priscilla Greaves lost to the Barbados pair of Tyrese Knight and Kenady King by 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 12-13 in the round of 32 encounter.
